Brazil elected it first mayor in 1873, the same year the town was incorporated. The village grew, became a city, and stretched in every direction, as new homes were built and business started. The city plat pushed north from the National Road and included an area set aside for Hendrix Street Park. The area is approximately 1.35 acres, bonded by Meridian St. on the east, Colfax on the west, Robison on the south, and Hendrix on the north. In 1972, the Brazil City Park Board renamed the park, "Babe" Wheeler Park, in honor of a public school teacher, coach, and city council member who had contributed a great deal to the schools, athletic programs and parks of the city. Considering the relatively small size of this park, it is as heavily used as any park in Brazil.
